Developing the area around the castle into a park started in the second half of the 19th
century when curative seamud was discovered in Kuressaare and the town rose among
the beloved resorts of Estonia, the western end of the czarist Russia. The mud patients
had their bath houses in the sea right behind the castle. An old cemetery was found
while developing the area.
