In the 16th century established Lauka manor was meant to guarantee the state power in
that remote place and also some protection from the pirates. Its name, meaning bay’s
hints there might have been an ancient harbor nearby. Ironically the manor’s new owner
after the expropriation in the beginning of the 1920s was an ex-gaffer of the manor, the
man hired to beat other Estonians should they get disobidient.
