Kristjan Jaak Peterson, born in 1801 and died at the early age of 21, was one of the first Estonian authors. Originating from a simple Estonian family he knew at least 16 languages, several from the east being among those. An urban legend says he used to walk tens of kilometers to reach Tartu University where he studied. He died of tuberculosis.
