August Maramaa (1881–1941) was an Estonian politican and the legendary mayor of Viljandi. The bronze statue of Maramaa with his dog Neff near the Viljandi town Hall was opened in 2007. During the reign of august Maramaa (1919-1939) Viljandi grew and developed extremely fast. Many parks, new streets and new city districts were founded. A stadium, a hotel, the new town hall, four schools, a hospital, a beach pavilion and a suspension bridge in the castle hills were built during his time in Viljandi. August Maramaa was arrested by the Soviet authorities in 1941 and he died in the same year in a Russian prison camp.
