The forest around the Vanajõe valley in Hiiumaa is a good place to
gather berries and mushrooms. Late in the autumn salmon comes
to spawn here. A water-mill has been here from the Medieval
Times. It is said that the river is man made by the estate owner
Ungern-Sternberg. Another manor’s mill fed from a brook on his
land but when refused to pay for it, Ungern-Sternberg routed the
water directly to the sea.
