The first records of the fortress date back to 1212. Varbola is one of the biggest fortresses of Ancient Estonia. The circumference of the stone wall that surrounds the fortress yard of almost 2 ha is up to 600 m and the outer side of the wall is at times more than 10 m high. There is a restored entrance in the fortress and a 13 m deep well which is surrounded by a limestone wall in the upper part. Numerous old coins and chips of clay dishes have been found from the fortress. For imagining the ancient times, a turret and a bricole have been built in the fortress.
In the inner yard of the fortress there are cosy fireplace areas and seats. Each year in August Varbola wood days are organised that attract many people interested in arts. A parking lot and tent area have been built for them under old oak trees. The fortress is the most attractive and preferred tourist attraction in Rapla County.
