Kaarma hillock, or Hag Carmele as it was named in Older Rhime Chronicle of Livonia,
was the last shelter that the islanders came to before being finally conqured by the
Livonian Order in 1261. The enemy ravaged the island so thoroughly the smoke above


the burning villages was observable deep from the main land.
