The plain landscape which opens for the travellers on the Tallinn-Narva road that passes through Jõelähtme, does not disclose itself easily. "Still waters run deep" as the saying goes.

The dull limestone region acquires a totally different meaning when a passer-by learns that it is one of the oldest cultural lands extremely rich in various archaeological and historical antiquities and natural objects. The rich historical heritage, which due to more than 5000 years of human settlement has been preserved up to the present day, now needs protection.

On 10 February 1998 the charter and boundaries of the Rebala Heritage Reserve were approved by the decree of the Estonian government. Within a mere 74 sq. km there are at least 300 archaeological remains, making the area one of the densest archaeological sites in Estonia. The idea of the reserve is to preserve the present environment as genuinely as possible, to protect the numerous historical remains from tampering and destruction, but also to provide information for the visitors.

Visitors can get acquainted with the local history and nature going along the trails by car or bicycle or even on foot. Informative signs and a map clearly marking the sights of the preservation area help to guide the visitor. It is recommended to begin your journey from the museum where archaeological finds and samples of the history of the area are displayed.
