The St. Catherine's Church was built by order of the Russian Empress Catherine II. While visiting Pärnu, she was puzzled by the fact that the Orthodox community had only one church (the now destroyed St. John's Church) at their disposal. Completed in 1768, the St. Catherine's Church is considered to be the most elaborately decorated baroque style church building with antique architecture forms. As such it has influenced orthodox ecclesiastical architecture in all Baltiv countries. The church is currently under the authority of the Moscow Patriarchate.
