The many dangers in Saaremaa coast waters demanded a light
house. Erected in 1809 Vilsandi light house reaches 40 meters
above the see and its light as far as 18 nautical miles. When the
chief of the light house, Artur Toom set a bird preserve there it
developed to Vilsandi National Park.
