It was already in 1759, the dying year of Schiller, that frau Elisabeth Dorothea von
Gersdorf had a statue erected for him. However the nine meters high statue along with
the surrounding park faded after her death. Schiller was most admired in the Baltics
– it was in 1830 that his homeland had a statue erected for him. The current statue in
Helme was opened in 2009.
