Valga Town Hall built in 1866 is set on the place an old market and a watch house used
to be. The town got its rights from Polish king Stephen Báthory in 1584. Situating at the
border with Latvia it would have almost caused a war between the two countries. Since
neither of them made compromises the town was split in two.
