Nikolai Pirogov (1810--1881), having studied and taught in Tartu University, was among the firsts in Europe to use ether for narcosis. While serving as a doctor in Crimean War he started to use plaster castings which significantly lessened the number of amputations. He published an atlas of human body with pictures drawn after cuts made to frozen corpse.
