The old Latin name for Viru-Nigula congregation was Maum which
was probably derived from the place’s ancient name Mahu. The
church’s base and arches of choir date back to the 13th century. In
1658 the army of Russian czar burned the church down. Although
rebuilt it also re-burned in the beginning of the II World War.
