Having written an elegiac poem Oh ma vaene Tardo liin which could be translated as Poor old me, Tartu Käsu Hans, a teacher in Puhja between 1700 and 1730, is considered being the first Estonian rooted author. Adrian Virginius along with his father translated the catechism and the New Testament to Southern Estonian.
