Orthodox Church of the Birth of Virgin Mary in Kuriste

This is the only active Orthodox church in Hiiumaa. It was built by the men from
Saaremaa in 1890. The yellow bricks they used were brought from Riga by oxen and
over the frozen sea. Before Kuriste had its own church the ceremonies were held in the
living room of a local man Tõnis. Tõnis had the church bells ringing in an ash-tree in his
yard.
