The church was built in the XIV century, and operated as a fortification church for some time. Main reconstructions occurred in the XIX century: in 1871 the tower was heightened to its current size. Assumably, the settlement and the area nearby received their name after the church (Maarjamaa, later Märjamaa).
The vassal fortress in Angerja was originally constructed in the 14th and 15th centuries, but was rebuilt and modernised several times thereafter.
