The Blue Hills is the place where the bloodiest battle ever held in Estonia took place. The Soviet army being stopped created a short gap in time that gave 100 000 Estonians a chance to escape to the West and secure the southern front for the Finns which allowed them to remain indepndendent.
A legend says local peasants received a miraculous relevation on this hill and later on found an Orthodox icon most holy under the oak-tree here, a sacrificial one itself. All of this happened in the 16th century.
