Pühajõe village, the village of Holy River in Estonian, was first mentioned in the Danish
Census Book in 1241. The first wooden church was built to the Estonians’ holy grove in
1467. The current one built in 1839 decayed during the Soviet time and was used as a
warehouse. The renovation works were finished on the Christmas Eve in 1989.
