It was in 1916 that oil shale was industrially mined for the first time. Done so by a
foreign estate owner. Local postman Juul however new the substance’s burning nature
a long time ago – burning stone being the name for it in Estonian. He had built his family
an oven from these stones and the oven had burned along with the logs.
A legend says local peasants received a miraculous relevation on this hill and later on found an Orthodox icon most holy under the oak-tree here, a sacrificial one itself. All of this happened in the 16th century.
