The history of each theatre is being shaped by its plays. The history of Russian theatre started on the 15th of December 1948 when "Семья пилотов" (Family of Pilots) by V. Suponev was first performed.
Until today The State Russian Drama Theatre of Estonia is the only professional Russian-language theatre in Estonia. During its more than 60 year long existence theatre has brought out more than 500 productions. Repertory has included contemporary Russian and foreign dramaturgy, Russian and foreign classics, Estonian drama, children's productions. The theatre has done lots of guest performances for other theatres in former Soviet states. Famous Russian directors Andrei Tarkovski and Roman Viktyuk have worked for the theatre, but also Estonian directors Voldemar Panso, Kaarin Raid, Ingo Normet, Kalju Komissarov and others. In a year 10-11 new productions premier mostly in the 661-seat Great Hall, but also in the 70-seat Mirror Hall.
