The Livonian Order erected the castle in the 14th century to protect itself from the
dangers lurking from the east. It was the first one in Estonia adjusted for fire arms. The
castle served as a winter quarters for the Swedish King Karl XII and his army in 1700–
1701 during the Great Nordic War. The war left the castle in ruins.
