The first manor in Keila-Joa was established already in the beginning of 17th century. During the next 200 years the manor changed hands several times. The situation changed in 1827 when Alexander von Benckendorff became the owner of the manor.
Alexander von Benckendorff bought the manor mainly because of the excellent location - the rough river with rapids in the deep valley, the waterfall with water whooshing down a height of 6 meters, high shores with a picturesque view to the surrounding nature.
In order to make use of the character of the beautiful nature as well as possible, new buildings were decided to establish. In 1833 the manor complex of Keila-Joa was completed in its present appearance according to the project of Andrei Stackenshneider, who later became one of the most influential representative of Historicism in Russia.
Present day
Currently the castle is in private hands and is being renovated. The reconstruction works of the complex are made through several stages and according to that, different services are being added. The main building is already finished with museum on its lower ground floor, restaurant and music hall on the ground floor and 5 suites on the first floor. On the second stage guest house/home church, pub and stable with horse riding fields will be completed.
The halls in the main building are perfect for celebrations. If you are looking for a luxurious interior for a special event like a wedding, then Keila-Joa castle is what you need. Two halls, with one meant for catering and another furnished as a salon with access to the terrace, provide an opportunity for different solutions. The most remarkable room in the main house is the hall of pillars, which has been used as a music hall at the glory days of the castle as well as today.
Keila-Joa castle is only 26 kilometres from Tallinn. One of the most impressive natural objects in Northern Estonia, Türisalu cliff with the height of 31 meters, is also situated on the way. Many other sights are in the area - Vasalemma castle, Padise monastery etc.
